The tree is a powerful Biblical metaphor used throughout scripture descriptive of people and nations. Romans 9 likens all of those who follow Jesus Christ to a tree which they have been spiritually grafted into. The scarlet thread is an ancient symbol for God’s redemption. In the Older Testament, the blood sacrifice of bulls and goats as a substitute for the penalty for sin (death) pointed to the ultimate sacrifice that God would make on our behalf through Jesus Christ dying on the cross. In Jesus, God became man, lived the life we should have lived and died the death we should have died. He is our perfect substitutionary sacrifice. In Jesus, God provides the very righteousness that He requires. It is Jesus’ blood that unites us as a body made up of a people redeemed, reconciled and united to God and one another.
